Kisoro Airstrip

Kisoro airstrip is located in Kisoro district, south-west of Uganda bordering Kabale, Kanungu, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The airstrip provides the easiest way to get to the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. If you do not want to travel for long distances on your Uganda safaris then you should opt for domestic flights.

Kisoro airstrip was established to help travelers easily access south-western Uganda. This airstrip is best for accessing the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The airstrip is about 343 kilometers from Entebbe International Airport. Though Kisoro airstrip does not operate for international flights, there are plans to make it an international airport, which will make it easy for tourists to access the parks directly from abroad.

Kisoro airstrip can be accessed by air from Entebbe international airport or Kajjansi airfield using domestic flights. The flights always depart Entebbe early and mid-morning morning and take 1-2 hours to get to the airstrip. From here you will need to drive for about an hour to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and approximately 2 hours to the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

About Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to half the remaining population of mountain gorillas. There are 15 gorilla groups in Bwindi that tourists can trek in four different sectors which are Nkuringo, Ruhijja, Buhoma, and Rushaga sector.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park also offers gorilla habituation experience where you spend more time with gorillas than gorilla trekking. Bwindi is home to 350 bird species recorded and 23 are endemic to this area, 324 species of trees, 200 species of butterflies and over 400 various plant species.

About Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the smallest national park in Uganda covering about 33 kilometers squared. Despite Mgahinga’s size, It is home to three of the Virunga Volcanoes and these include Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Muhabura, and Mount Gahinga.

The slopes of this Virunga Volcanoes are home to mountain gorillas. Tourists can only trek one habituated gorilla family in the park known as Nyakagezi gorilla family. Golden monkey trekking is the other diverse interesting activity in Mgahinga.

Volcano climbing can also be done on any of the three volcanoes with Mgahinga and Sabyinyo being the only ones hiked from the Ugandan side. You will be able to stand in three countries (Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo) at once when you reach the peak of Mount Sabyinyo.
