Gorilla trekking trips are a reward of seeing mountain gorillas more and this makes up for the effort of reaching them. Being with these incredible gentle giants is a truly moving experience and Uganda is offers a new extended experience in an exciting evolution in gorilla tracking.
Only 900 or so mountain gorillas roam the rain forests of western Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and the Virunga Mountains that span the borders of southern Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. They are found nowhere else in the wild on earth. Once on the verge of extinction, their survival is one of Africa’s greatest conservation success stories.
Travellers in Africa interested in mountain gorilla tracking experience are entitled to visiting the Eastern African region as it’s gifted with these gentle giants. These gorillas can be found in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable national park and Mgahinga gorilla national park, Rwanda’s volcanoes national park and lastly in Virunga national park found in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Today, Bwindi Impenetrable national park is home to approximately 400 mountain gorillas, with 11 fully habituated families available for tracking. The day starts at the park headquarters, where guests are allocated their gorilla group and guide after being briefed on the essential rules and guidelines that help protect both primates and trackers.
Traditional gorilla tracking cost for each gorilla permit in Uganda is $600 for Foreign residents, $700 for Non Foreign residents and UGX 250,000 for East African citizens. Now $1500 in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, offers a virtual guarantee that you’ll see gorillas up close and personal in a relaxed, even docile, mood for one unforgettable hour.
Also in Bwindi Impenetrable national park, gorilla habituation experience permit costs $1000 for Foreign residents, $1500 for Non Foreign residents and UGX 750,000 for East African citizens. The gorilla habituation experience lasts four hours, but how long you spend in their company depends on how long it takes to find them.
Of the fact that tourists can visit the parks at any time of the year, peak periods for mountain gorilla trekking are majorly the 2 dry seasons (June – September and December – February). Mandatory gorilla viewing permits are often more easily and cheaply obtained during the quieter rainy seasons (March – May and October – November), though trekking conditions tend to be more difficult at this time. The forests can be cold and wet at high altitudes, particularly in the night and early morning.
Whichever option you opt for, tracking mountain gorillas is extraordinary, evoking a deep connection with our closest cousins in a truly enriching and unforgettable experience.
